The Long-Distance Moving Checklist
A week-by-week timeline so nothing slips through the cracks. Start about eight weeks out and check the boxes as you go.
Your week-by-week timeline
Adjust to your dates — but earlier is always easier and cheaper.
8 weeks out
Get binding quotes from a few movers, vet them, and book. Start a folder (physical or digital) for everything move-related.
6 weeks out
Declutter hard — donate, sell, toss. You pay to move volume, so this is real money. Order packing supplies if you're packing yourself.
4 weeks out
Start packing non-essentials. File a change of address with USPS. Transfer or schedule utilities at both ends. Confirm your inventory with your mover.
2 weeks out
Confirm move dates and details with your coordinator. Pack in earnest. Arrange time off, travel, and pet/child plans for move day.
1 week out
Pack an essentials bag (documents, meds, chargers, a few days of clothes, valuables you'll keep with you). Defrost the fridge. Confirm the arrival window.
Move day
Walk the crew through the home, point out fragile and high-value items, and keep your essentials and paperwork with you. Do a final empty-house walkthrough before you leave.
At delivery & after
Check off items against your inventory as they come in. Note any damage before the crew leaves. Then update your license, registration, and voter registration in your new state.
